⚠️ Special cases
Driving license already expired
If your license has expired , you cannot drive until you have undergone a medical examination.
Expired more than 5 years ago? As well as the medical examination, a driving assessment is required: a practical test with an official of the Motor Vehicle Department (Motorizzazione), to check that you still meet the technical fitness requirements.
If you pass, a duplicate of the updated licence is issued. If you fail, the driver must undergo licence re-examination , that is a theory test and a practical driving test.
Are you abroad, in a non-EU country?
Italian citizens residing or staying for at least six months in non-EU countries can obtain confirmation of the validity of their Italian driving licence from Italian diplomatic and consular authorities, provided that it is category A or B , expired no more than three years previously, and does not fall within the cases provided for in Article 119, paragraphs 2-bis and 4 of the Highway Code.
- A medical examination is required to determine whether you meet the physical and mental requirements, at a medical practice designated by the consulate.
- By going to the consular office with your driving license to renew and a medical certificate, you will receive a renewal certificate.
- The consular renewal is valid for travel both in Italy and abroad.
- Once you have re-established your residency in Italy, your driving license must be re-confirmed at the Central Office of the Department for Land Transport responsible for your place of residence.
Do you have any particular pathologies?
If you have specific medical conditions or have undergone certain surgeries, you'll need to contact your Local Medical Commission to renew your license. If you have any questions, please ask us: we'll check together if your case qualifies for a commission.
📄 Duplicate driving license
The driving licence can be duplicated in three cases: loss , when it is misplaced; deterioration , when it is no longer legible or is broken; reclassification , when you want to downgrade some categories.
If you've lost your license, you must first contact the police to report it . Bring a passport photo (required) and an identity document: they will issue you a temporary driving permit and initiate the automatic process for a duplicate (after making a PagoPA payment on the Driver's Portal), which will be delivered to your home.
Sometimes, however, the license is "non-duplicable" : in that case, we'll issue a new license. We need:

- Residence permit (non-EU citizens)
- 2 passport photos, one of which must be certified by the municipal office
If your license is broken or has some of the information illegible, you must request a new one. We need:
- Deteriorated driving licence
- Identity document
- Residence permit (non-EU citizens)
- 2 passport photos (specifications) , one of which must be certified by the municipal office
If you have reached the age limit for holding a C or D license, you can downgrade your license to a B license . We need:
- License
- Residence permit (non-EU citizens)
- 2 passport photos (specifications) , one of which must be certified* by the municipal office
* If your license is about to expire, you can also obtain a medical certificate from our health officer, adding €40.00 to the cost. In this case, a certified passport photo (specifications) is not required.
You can drive while you wait. For duplicates due to deterioration or reclassification, when you hand over your license to us, we'll issue you a provisional driving permit valid for 30 days , until your new license is issued.
