Inheriting a vehicle
Upon the owner's death, a vehicle registered with the PRA doesn't transfer automatically : a deed of acceptance of inheritance is required. Here's how it works and what to bring.
👪 Who should the vehicle be registered to?
The starting point is always the same: the vehicle must be registered in the name of all heirs . From there, the process changes depending on what you want to do with it.
All you need to do is accept the inheritance: the vehicle is registered in the name of all heirs, jointly owned. Just one step and you're done.
- The inheritance deed is registered, registering the vehicle in the name of the heirs.
- A normal sale is carried out in favor of the final owner.
These are two separate procedures , and therefore two costs. If you already know that the vehicle will go to just one person, let us know right away: we'll work out the most convenient route together. If the two operations are done at the same time, you'll save a little.
📄 What is needed to accept an inheritance?
- Circulation Certificate (Cdc) or Single Document (DU)
- Paper Certificate of Ownership (Cdp)document issued by the PRA until 04/10/2015
- Death Certificate
- Electronic Identity Card of the heir(s)or another document along with the tax code
- Residence permit of the heir(s) (if non-EU citizen(s))If the residence permit has expired, submit appropriate renewal application forms.
We need the information of all heirs , even those who will never use the vehicle. Bring us each person's ID and tax code: this is the part that most often causes the appointment to be postponed.

The cost of accepting a vehicle inheritance is the same as transferring ownership, meaning there's no fixed price: the amount depends on the type of vehicle. Use the calculator below to see the price.
