The tachograph card
The driver card is used by those who drive vehicles equipped with a digital tachograph as per Regulation 3820/85. It is personal and cannot be transferred to third parties.
It can be recognized by its white background. It is personal and non-transferable and must be inserted into the vehicle's tachograph before starting to drive.
✅ Who can apply for it
To obtain a driver's card, three requirements must be met:
- Valid driving licenseAnd of the appropriate category for the vehicle you intend to drive.
- No other tachograph cardAlready registered in your name.
- Residence in ItalyIn the province of the Chamber of Commerce where you submit your application.
The card contains the driver's name, surname, date of birth, photograph and driving licence number, as required by the Ministerial Decree of the Ministry of Productive Activities of 23 June 2005 .
📅 How long does it last and when should it be renewed?
- 5 years Valid from date of issue
- 15 days Working days in advance to submit the renewal
The renewal application must be submitted no later than 15 working days before the expiry date. It's always a good idea to act early: a new card won't arrive overnight, and you can't drive without a valid card.
Three things you absolutely must know
The expired card must be returned to the Chamber of Commerce.
The renewed card can only be used after the expiration date of the previous one. It doesn't expire sooner: the old one remains valid until that date.
Download your data the day before the expiration date. After that date, this operation is no longer possible, and the data stored on the card is no longer recoverable.

Cost of service.
Make a note of the expiry date. When you pick up your card, immediately set a reminder in your phone calendar for five years minus one month: it's the easiest way to avoid being stuck just when you have the most work to do.
