The test plate

The test plate allows unregistered or not yet ready vehicles to circulate on the road for technical tests, demonstrations, transfers, sales, or setup.

Vehicles equipped with a permit and test plate, even if undergoing repairs or not yet having their bodywork fitted , can circulate throughout the national territory, at any time and day of the week, provided they are used for these purposes.

๐Ÿญ Vehicle manufacturers and sales network
  • Motor vehicle and trailer manufacturing factories
  • Their representatives, dealers, commission agents and sales agents
  • Authorized dealers of such vehicles (even if they have no relationship with the manufacturing factories and even if the sale takes place online)
๐Ÿ”ฉ Component manufacturers and their network
  • Car body and tire manufacturing factories
  • Factories manufacturing equipment systems or devices, when their application requires updating the vehicle registration certificate (Article 236 of the Regulation)
  • Their representatives, dealers, commission agents and sales agents, and authorized dealers of vehicles equipped with such devices

  • Companies that transport unregistered vehicles to or from storage areas by road, for journeys not exceeding 100 km
  • Operators of car repair and conversion workshops, even on their own account

  • Public and private research bodies conducting vehicle experiments

๐Ÿšฆ The rules to follow

  1. 1 Only one vehicle at a timeThe permit is valid for one vehicle at a time and must be kept on board (Article 1, paragraph 4, of the Regulation).
  2. 2 It can be transferred from vehicle to vehicleThe license plate can be transferred from one vehicle to another, but always with the relevant authorization.
  3. 3 Who must be on boardThe permit holder, or a designated employee, or a collaborator with a functional relationship with the permit holder, provided that the relationship is certified by appropriate documentation and the collaborator is designated.
  4. 4 Who else can get on boardTest personnel, if the vehicle is for technical testing, or potential buyers, if the vehicle is being driven for demonstration purposes.
  5. 5 License plate displayed at the rearWhen in circulation, the vehicle must display the test license plate at the rear.
  6. 6 Mandatory insurance coverageThe test plate must be covered by third-party liability insurance.

The test license plate holder (or his/her designated representative) and a maximum of one other person must be on board the vehicle to test the vehicle. No other passengers may be carried.

The same documents are valid for both the first issue and the renewal.

  • Company registry extract
  • Identity document of the legal representative

๐Ÿ’ถ How much does it cost?

  • 120 โ‚ฌ First release of new permit and license plate
  • 100 โ‚ฌ Renewal/extension of an existing authorization

Don't let it expire. If the permit expires, the vehicle with the test plate cannot be driven. You have six months to renew it after it expires, after which it must be returned to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
