Points-based driving licence and recovery courses

Have you lost points on your license? Here's how the system works and how to recover them with our courses.

๐ŸŽฏ How does the points-based driving licence work?

Every driver's license holder starts with 20 points . From there, the score can go up or down.

  • 20 Starting points
  • 30 Maximum achievable score
  • 0 Licence re-examination

When points are lost

Points are deducted for serious violations, as set out in Article 126 bis of the Highway Code .

When points are recovered

  • By taking a points recovery course.
  • Automatically, after 2 years from the last violation with a deduction: the score returns to 20.
  • If you already have 20 points and commit no violations, you receive 2 extra points every two years, up to a maximum of 30.
โ„น๏ธ

Multiple violations at once? Anyone who commits multiple violations at once can lose a maximum of 15 points โ€”provided none of them result in the suspension or revocation of their license.

โš ๏ธ

If you get zero points, you'll have to retake the license test (theory test + driving test). If you fail the test, your license will be revoked.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Two special cases

  • ๐Ÿš› Professional drivers The reduction also applies to holders of CAP B or Driver Qualification Card, when the violation is committed while driving a vehicle for which that qualification is mandatory.
  • ๐Ÿ”ฐ New drivers A new driver who commits an infringement resulting in a penalty will have double the number of points deducted.

๐Ÿ” How to check your points balance

Points balance

Call with your license in hand:

06 45775962

The service is available 24/7, and costs the same as a local call. An automated operator will notify you of your current balance.

Alternatively, you can register on the Motorist Portal or use the IO app to check your balance online, along with details of any deductions.

๐Ÿ“š Points recovery courses

By taking a course, you can recover lost points. The duration, recoverable points, and cost depend on your license.

๐Ÿš— Driving licences A and B 250 โ‚ฌ
  • 12 hours of course, in 6 2-hour lessons
  • 6 recoverable points
  • To be completed within 2 weeks
๐Ÿš› Driving licences C, C1, D, D1 350 โ‚ฌ
  • 18 hours of course, in 9 2-hour lessons
  • 9 recoverable points
  • To be completed within 4 weeks
๐Ÿ“ฆ CQC and CAP B 400 โ‚ฌ
  • 20-hour course, lessons up to 3 hours
  • 9 recoverable points

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ

The timetable is set by law. You cannot cram in more lessons than allowed in order to finish sooner, nor spread them out beyond the permitted number of weeks: we take these constraints into account when we draw up the calendar.
